Birth Order And Relationships: How One Affects The Other

There are many factors that shape you, your personality and how you deal with relationships such as race, gender, age, where you were raised, and the order of birth. Birth order is distinguished as how you rank amongst your siblings; youngest child, oldest child, middle child, only child, or twin. The birth order personality traits have been studied and proven to have a definite correlation with how the person acts and reacts in different situations and how relationships survive.

Birth Order Personality Traits

Birth order and relationships can be seen when children are quite young. The oldest child tends to be people pleasers, organized, confident, conscientious and aggressive. When growing up they are controlling and dominating to the point that the younger siblings think of them as bossy.

Oldest children that are boys with younger brothers are the most macho, leaders, and very dynamic. If those same oldest have younger sisters, that means they will relate well with women.

An oldest child that is a female with younger brothers you will be able to deal with male teachers easier than the younger female siblings. If you have younger female siblings, you will be able to get along with male authority figures better than your younger sisters.

The middle child is usually the most difficult to raise possibly because they are more difficult to understand at times. They tend to be impatient, shy, uptight and quiet, or loud, outgoing, friendly, laid back and patient. They are usually the total opposite of their older sibling; however, they both tend to be competitive, rebellious, attention seeking but also diplomatic.

Last born or the youngest child in a family is more easygoing, friendly, observant and creative. Youngest children tend to have more varied interests than older siblings, are risk takers, and love to travel. These are the children that will question how things are usually done and they will find new ways to solve problems.

If the youngest is a male growing up with older brothers, they will be fearless in sports and challenges of any type. Last born females with female older siblings are ambitious, driven to the point that nothing will stand in their way of accomplishing their goal and they are very creative geniuses.

If growing up with male older siblings, the last born girl will attract more men when older than older sibling females.

The only child is similar to the first-born child but with the traits personified. They tend to mature faster, are perfectionists, self-centered, responsible, attention seekers, get along well with older people but have difficulty sharing. They are prompt, enterprising, energetic, set goals and get them accomplished. However, they tend to be more self-centered, inflexible, and critical of not only themselves but others and have a fear of trying something new.

Birth order relationships for twins are a bit more difficult to pin down. More often than not, twins are looked at as a single unit instead of two separate individuals, therefore sometimes giving them an identity crisis.

They can take on any of the other order traits, but between the two, one usually becomes the leader and the other the follower.

The leader mostly resembles the first-born with the aggressive, outspoken and opinionated attitude. The follower tends to be more shy, quiet, and compliant.

Twins have an unusually strong compassion for others, especially their own twin.

Birth Order And Relationship Compatibility

When growing into the mature stage in a person’s life and looking for a partner, birth order compatibility definitely plays a large part on how the relationship will survive.

Theory states that opposites attract, therefore the best match for the oldest child would be a last born child especially if the first-born is a male and the last born a female, both with opposite sex siblings. In that case, they would be familiar in that type of relationship.

If both people in a relationship are first-born children, there will be a rank conflict. They will both want to be in control. Sometimes, however, this situation works out fine since they are so similar having the same values and expectations.

Birth order and relationship compatibility for the middle child is usually the easiest, since they are equally compatible with first, last or middle born people.

For an only child, their best match for romance would be a first-born. However, if the only child’s mother is a first-born and the mother is usually where the child learns how to interact with men, then that only child would be better off with a last born.

Twins, especially if they are the only children in the family, are better off marrying another twin. If they have other siblings, they do well with any other person in the birth order because of their consideration for others.

It is amazing how much the order of your birth can affect you during your life. Even before that first breath is taken many factors are already decided for you. You can fight it and sometimes a person is not true to the traits, but it is rare. If your marriage is a success or a failure, oftentimes it is because of the ingrown traits of the birth order.
